BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Carolina Hurricanes lost 2-0 to the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center on Tuesday.

In being shut out, the Hurricanes outshot the Sabres 35-21 and finished 0-for-4 on the power play.

Goaltenders Anton Khudobin and Drew MacIntyre split duties with Khudobin stopping all nine shots he faced while MacIntyre allowed two goals on 12 shots, both coming in the second period.

A larger cause for concern for Carolina than losing its second consecutive preseason contest was the status of Jordan Staal.

The centerman left the game during the third period, the result of getting tangled up on a play with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges.

It was determined that Staal had suffered a broken bone in the lower portion of his right leg as announced by the team following the game.

“I’m concerned for sure,” Carolina head coach Bill Peters said.

“He’s a big piece of what we’re gonna’ do moving forward.”

Staal will return to Raleigh with the team on Wednesday, and will be evaluated by team doctors on Thursday with no timetable for his recovery yet determined.
