RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Tuesday.

Murphy, 21, has earned five assists in 16 NHL games for the Hurricanes this season, most recently posting four assists in 10 games since being recalled on Dec. 30.

He leads all Charlotte skaters in assists this season with 17 helpers in 23 AHL games.

While the Hurricanes are currently on break for the 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend, Murphy, who was selected to participate in the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic, will play in the event to be held Jan. 25-26 in Utica, N.Y.

Murphy is the first Checker selected to appear in an AHL All-Star Game since defenseman Michal Jordan and goaltender Justin Peters, both currently in the NHL with Carolina and Washington, respectively, represented the Western Conference in 2013.

The Hurricanes’ first round selection, 12th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Murphy has skated in 68 career NHL games with Carolina, totaling 17 points (2g, 15a).
