DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Blue Devils football head coach David Cutcliffe announced on Monday that Scottie Montgomery was named as the team’s new associate head coach and offensive coordinator and mentor for the team’s quarterbacks.

Montgomery now becomes the primary gameday play-caller for Duke’s offensive unit for the 2014 season and fills the position vacated by Kurt Roper who took on similar responsibilities with the Florida Gators.

“Scottie Montgomery is the person I had the most confidence in as I looked at all of the potential candidates,” Cutcliffe said.

“We have a systematic approach. People don’t understand how much the system and the way we practice applies to who we are.  Scottie was with us as a very young coach early on, but boy did he buy into to how we coach and practice.  And I think he took a lot of that to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now that he’s back, he’s grown and he’s become such a great football coach.  Scottie and I have had hours and hours of conversation, and he’s been in our system two different times, been away a little while, so there’s a little spice involved with him coming back with thoughts that can add to what we’re doing.”

Montgomery returned to the Duke staff in February 2013 after spending three seasons (2010-12) as an assistant coach with the National Football League’s (NFL) Pittsburgh Steelers.

Prior to coaching in the pros, he served as a Duke assistant coach from 2006-09 under both Cutcliffe and former head coach Ted Roof.

During last season’s record-setting season, Montgomery served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator of the passing game while mentoring Duke’s wide receivers, the position he played and received All-ACC honors for while playing with the Blue Devils from 1996-99.

In 2013, Duke finished 10-4 overall, captured the ACC’s Coastal Division championship, and appeared in the 46th annual Chick-fil-A Bowl against Texas A&M in Atlanta, Ga.
