CARY, NC – Saturday presented nothing like the sunny and dry opening-round playing conditions the field at the 2023 SAS Championship experienced at Prestonwood Country Club a day earlier.

Weathering the storm

With play suspended Saturday at just past 11 a.m. , Round 1 leader Rod Pampling, along with everyone else took refuge in the clubhouse until 4 p.m., when Round 2 play restarted.

Prestonwood Country Club had received 1.20 inches which prompted lift, clean and place protocols to be in effect in the fairway.

Despite breaking that round up in two segments, Saturday into Sunday morning due to darkness, by the time he finished, Pampling carded a four-under par 68 and remained atop the leaderboard at -10 overall.

Staying close, making moves on Sunday

While former SAS champions, Ernie Els (2020) and Jerry Kelly (2019), among others, stayed close within a shot or two behind Pampling, others made charges during Round 2 play that put them right in the mix heading into the final round.

John Huston made an impressive push, carding a 7-under par 65 to trail by one, followed by a pair of 5-under par 67s from Richard Green (-8) and Paul Broadhurst. (-8)

Add Vijay Singh (68) and Steven Alker (68) alongside Huston, all breathing down Pampling’s neck at 9-under par overall, and you have another barnstorming finish to witness on the 18th at Prestonwood.
