ACC/Staff Reports
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Louisville, Miami, Duke, and Florida State rounded out the Quarterfinal round field at the 2024 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday.
Cardinals survive Eagles attack
Trailing the 13th-seeded Eagles by three points, the fifth-seeded Cardinals narrowly escaped with a 58-55 win.
Creating three turnovers and putting together a 6-0 scoring run during the final 93 seconds of play was enough for Louisville to advance to the next round.
Coming off a 74-58 loss to Notre Dame last week, puts Louisville in position to avenge that loss in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup against the 4th-seeded Fighting Irish – the third meeting between the teams this season.
The Cardinals won their first matchup by a 73-66 margin back on Feb. 8.
Hurricanes endure and surge past stalled Tar Heels offensive finish
Miami trailed by 14 points at one point during the first half, but hit its pace and limited the Tar Heels to 22 second-half points on 7-for-30 shooting from the floor.
Miami’s comeback continued into the third quarter, outscoring the Tar Heels 15-10.
UNC led 54-48 early in the fourth period, but skidded into an 0-for-9 shooting drought that gave rise to a 12-1 closing run by the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes fell to top seed Virginia Tech, a 76-52 loss in the two squads’ regular-season meeting on Jan. 11 in Blacksburg.
The nationally ranked No. 11 Hokies (23-6) enter Friday’s quarterfinal game facing a Miami program that knows how to take advantage of postseason Tournament deep-run opportunities, having won five of their last seven ACC Tournament games dating back to 2022.
Blue Devils minimize any stinging effects of Yellow Jackets
Dropping shots at a 51-percent pace, 7th-seeded Duke took control with an 18-1 run to go up 38-21 on the Yellow Jackets late in the second half.
Not to be deterred, 10th-seeded Georgia Tech scored eight unanswered points, but couldn’t pull much closer.
The Blue Devils’ inside presence at both ends of the court proved too much to match.
Throughout, Duke outscored the Yellow Jackets 46-26 in the paint, and out-rebounded them by a 42-27 margin to finish the job and advance to the quarterfinal round.
Duke (20-10) now faces No. 2 seed NC State (25-5) in the third game of the day on Friday.
The matchup against the nationally-ranked No. 10 Wolfpack will be the third in seven weeks between the teams, each claiming a win at home during the regular season.
NC State posted a 72-57 win in Raleigh on Jan. 21, while Duke won 69-58 in Durham on Feb. 25.
Florida State doesn’t look back, coasts past upstart Wake Forest
Not looking back to a stunning 2023 ACC Tournament loss to Wake Forest, sixth-seeded Florida State maintained focus and produced a 70-53 victory over the 14th-seeded Demon Deacons in Thursday night’s final game.
The Seminoles never trailed, built a 37-17 halftime lead, and rode that momentum to the end for their eighth win in 10 games.
FSU (22-9) now tips off against third-seeded Syracuse (23-6) on Friday’s final quarterfinal game.
The Seminoles look to avenge a 79-73 regular-season road loss to the Orange back on Jan. 18.
