RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State Wolfpack women’s basketball head coach Wes Moore added four recruits during the early signing period as announced on Wednesday.
Moore’s first recruiting class at NC State consists of Chloe Jackson, Akela Maize, Chelsea Nelson, and Carlee Schuhmacher, who will all join the Wolfpack for the 2014-2015 season.
“So far in this class in the early signing period, I feel as though we have addressed a lot of our needs,” Moore said.
“All of these student-athletes come from very successful programs and they know how to win. They’ve been taught what it takes to be successful. They’ve been coached well and we feel as though they will continue to get better and progress with us.”
Chloe Jackson
Jackson, from Upper Marlboro, Md., is currently entering her senior season at Riverdale Baptist.
The 5-foot-9-inch shooting guard earned a score of 90 on ESPN’s recruiting rankings and has a knack for scoring, as she averaged 15.4 points per game during her junior season.
This past season, her Riverdale Baptist team went 29-6 and reached the semifinals of the ESPN National High School Invitational.
Jackson is ranked as the 18th best guard in the class of 2014 by ESPN.
Akela Maize
The 6-foot-5-inch Maize is rated by ESPN as the 16th best post player in the class of 2014.
Described by scouts to have ‘off the charts potential’ in the front court, Maize played the first three years of her high school career at Dudley High School in Greensboro and will play out her final season at New Hope Christian Academy in Thomasville, N.C.
During her sophomore (2011-12) season at Dudley, Maize was a force to be reckoned with when it came to rebounding.
Through the first 22 games of the season, she collected 10 or more rebounds on 10 occasions, including a high of 15 points.
Maize is the first North Carolina recruit for the Wolfpack under Moore’s tenure.
“Recruiting the state of North Carolina is a priority for us, so this is a good start in that regard,” Moore stated.
“We’re looking forward to getting her stronger and helping her maybe be a little more physical as a player, but she has great potential.”
Chelsea Nelson
Nelson is a versatile 6-foot-1-inch forward from Antioch, Tenn., and plays for John Overton High School as well with the Tennessee Flight in AAU play.
A two-sport athlete, in addition to her time on the court, Nelson is also an accomplished cross country runner for her high school.
Carlee Schuhmacher
A dominant force on the NJCAA circuit, Carlee Schuhmacher will join the Wolfpack as a junior for the 2014-15 season.
The native of Watertown, Wis., recorded 20 double-doubles in 32 games last season while averaging an impressive 16.2 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 4.6 blocks per contest for the 24-8 DMACC Bears.
She led the Iowa Community College Athletic Association in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots.
For her efforts, Schuhmacher was named a first-team National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-American.
NC State has started the 2013-14 season 2-0 under new head coach Wes Moore, earning victories over St. Bonaventure and Towson. The Wolfpack is next in action on Saturday, Nov. 16 at home against Presbyterian, with tip-off scheduled for noon.
