RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes recalled defenseman Danny Biega from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Wednesday.
Due to defenseman John-Michael Liles suffering a lower body injury in Tuesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators, the Hurricanes were down to five defensemen and recalled the 23-year-old blueliner.
Biega is expected to make his NHL debut on Thursday at the Bell Centre against the Montreal Canadiens.
As a second-year pro, he has posted 14 points (2 goals, 12 assists) in 64 games with Charlotte this season which ranks him tied for third among team defensemen in scoring.
Biega has scored five goals and earned 27 assists (32 points) in 130 career AHL regular-season games with Charlotte.
The Hurricanes’ third round pick, 67th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Biega played his collegiate hockey with the Harvard Crimson (ECAC), totaling 28 goals and 57 assists (85 points) in 132 career games.
While at Harvard, Biega received numerous recognitions including being named ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman (2011-12), NCAA East First-Team All-American, Hobey Baker Award candidate, and finished second in voting for ECAC Hockey Player of the Year.
