RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes recalled forward Brock McGinn from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Sunday.

The move came about following an upper-body injury (suspected concussion) suffered by forward Phil Di Giuseppe in the Hurricanes’ 2-1 overtime loss to Nashville on Saturday.

After getting his first NHL call-up on December 4th, Di Giuseppe recorded eight points (3g, 5a) with a plus-four rating in 14 NHL games.

Without Di Giuseppe, Carolina played with 11 forwards against the Predators, and combined with an illness to forward Jay McClement, McGinn’s recall should stabilize the roster in the short term.

Carolina begins a brief two-game road trip to Western Canada playing at Edmonton on Monday and Vancouver on Wednesday.

McGinn returns to Carolina after posting three points (2g, 1a) and a minus-12 rating in 14 NHL games played earlier this season.

Since his reassignment to Charlotte on December 6th, McGinn has posted 12 points (4g, 8a) in nine AHL games.

He currently ranks third among Checkers skaters with 19 points and second with 10 goals despite playing in only 19 of the team’s 31 contests.

McGinn was named the AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 13, and currently has an active five-game point streak – the longest of his career and is tied for the second-longest active streak in the AHL.
