RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Friday that the team had hired former NHL goaltender Curtis Joseph as its goaltending consultant and added Bill Burniston as Assistant Strength Coach and Fascial Stretch Therapist.

As goaltending consultant, Joseph will work closely with the Hurricanes’ netminder prospects at the American Hockey League (AHL) level in Charlotte.

He will also be a resource for the team’s drafted goaltenders in the junior and college ranks, and be available for special assignments as needed.

“We are thrilled that Curtis has chosen to be a part of our organization,” executive vice president and general manager Ron Francis said.

“His playing career speaks for itself, and his experience in the game and knowledge of the goaltending position will be an asset to the Hurricanes.”

Joseph, 49, appeared in 943 career regular-season games during an 18-year career, compiling a record of 454-352-90 with the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames.

The Keswick, Ontario native earned 51 career shutouts and had a career goals-against average of 2.79.

Joseph also appeared in 132 career Stanley Cup playoff games, posting a 63-66 record with a 2.45 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in the postseason.

Joseph was a three-time NHL All-Star (1994, 1999, 2000) and won a gold medal with Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Following the 1999-00 season, Joseph was awarded the King Clancy Trophy, given for exemplifying leadership qualities on and off the ice and making noteworthy humanitarian contributions to his community.

Burniston has worked for the Hurricanes on a part-time basis since 2013 and will now assume full-time duties.

“Bill has done terrific work for our team over the past few seasons,” Francis said.

“He is well-liked by the staff and players and we felt that it was important for him to be able to assist our athletes both at home and on the road on a full-time basis.”

Burniston is a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

His certifications also include Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and Flexibility Specialist (Level 3 Medical) from the Stretch to Win Institute.

Burniston received his B.S. in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he worked with the school’s sports medicine team, and earned his Master’s degree from Seton Hall University.
