RALEIGH, NC – Following the end of the team’s preseason schedule, the Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday, a significant paring down of its training camp roster.
Finishing the preseason with a 4-1 record, following an 8-1 win over Columbus on Monday and a 4-2 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday, the club continued to prepare for its home-opener with significant roster adjustments.
The Hurricanes’ training camp roster now stands at 25 players.
Chicago-bound
Forwards Noel Gunler, Vasiliy Ponomarev, Jamieson Rees, Malte Stromwall and Tuukka Tieksola, defenseman Anttoni Honka and goaltenders Pyotr Kochetkov and Zach Sawchenko were assigned to the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate club, the Chicago Wolves.
Defenseman Griffin Mendel was released from his amateur tryout contract and will return to Chicago.
Waived
Forwards Ryan Dzingel, Mackenzie MacEachern, Stelio Mattheos and Lane Pederson and defenseman Maxime Lajoie were placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Chicago, and forward Ryan Suzuki and defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald were placed on the injured non-roster list.

After signing defenseman Grigorii Dronov to a one-year, two-way contract worth $770,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level on Oct. 3, the Hurricanes and Dronov agreed to mutually part ways just two days later.
Carolina hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets at PNC Arena at 7 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 12.
