RALEIGH, NC – Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women’s basketball action rounded out the weekend in the Triangle as NC State, Duke, and UNC completed homestands on Sunday.
Getting deeper into league play
NC State (11-4, 4-0) and Duke (9-6, 4-0) each extended win streaks and remained unbeaten in ACC play, keeping pace to share first place with Louisville (14-3, 4-0) and Virginia (12-3, 4-0).
The 16th-ranked Tar Heels fell to 2-2 in ACC play, and now sit at 13-4 overall.
Wolfpack howling
At Reynolds Coliseum, NC State posted a 71-60 win over the Cal Bears (9-7, 0-3) led by Khamil Pierre’s game-high 21 points and seven rebounds.
The Wolfpack extended its current win streak to six games as well as its home court streak against ACC opponents which now stands at 15 games.
Blue Devils earn big win
Up in Durham, all five starting Blue Devils scored in double figures, topping No. 18 Notre Dame (10-4, 2-2) by a 82-68 margin at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Led by Taina Mair, who finished with a season-high 23 points, six rebounds, and six assists, Duke earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season, and extended its current win streak to six games.
Tar Heels shooting falls short in OT
No. 16 North Carolina (13-4, 2-2) went scoreless late in overtime and suffered a 77-71 loss to Stanford (13-3, 2-1).
The Cardinal out-rebounded the Tar Heels by a 40-28 margin throughout the game, despite Nyla Harris’ 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting that led North Carolina’s offense.
Tied at 65 apiece, both teams scrapped to put points on the board for five minutes in extra time.
Harris’ layup was North Carolina’s lone score from the field, and tied the game at 69-69 with 2:11 remaining.
However, the Tar Heels failed to convert further, while Stanford managed to score on layups and free throws to earn the win.
