SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Birdies were chirping at the 2022 Women’s U.S. Open on the course at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club on Friday.

Mina Harigae followed up her first-round 64 with a 2-under 69 during Round 2, and continued to lead the field at 9-under par.

Harigae carded five birdies and three bogeys on the day, and eventually shared the lead with Minjee Lee.

A seven-time LPGA Tour winner, Lee joined Harigae at the top of the leaderboard posting a 5-under 66.

“Since it was the morning, fairways were a little softer, greens were a little softer, so my drives weren’t going as far and I had a little longer clubs in,” Harigae said.

“The golf course can really catch up to you quickly, so just trying to take whatever I have in front of me,” Lee, a recent winner at the Cognizant Founders Cup, added.

“Whenever I have a birdie opportunity, I try to take advantage of that.”

The cut came at 3-over-par 145 with 66 professionals and four amateurs qualifying for the weekend.

Reigning U.S. Girls’ Junior champion and 2022 NCAA Division I individual titlist Rose Zhang, No. 1 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, world No. 2 Ingrid Lindblad, 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball runner-up Bailey Shoemaker and Saki Baba, of Japan, were the four amateurs to make the cut.

At least one amateur has made the cut in every U.S. Women’s Open, which includes the inaugural championship in 1946 that was contested entirely at match play.

The week began with 29 amateurs in the starting field of 156.

High profile notables

2014 U.S. Women’s Open winner Michelle Wie West wrapped up her full-time LPGA Tour career with a 3-over 74, missing the cut at +5 overall.

Defending champion Yuka Saso (+9) and three-time champion Annika Sorenstam (+13) also missed the cut.

Five past champions made the cut: Sung Hyun Park (2017), Eun-Hee Ji (2009), Jeongeun Lee6 (2019), A Lim Kim (2020) and In Gee Chun (2015).

In addition to Wie West, Sorenstam and Saso, three other past winners also missed the cut, including Brittany Lang (2016), Ariya Jutanugarn (2018), and Na Yeon Choi (2012).

Five players who gained entrance into the field over the past couple of weeks as first alternates made the cut: Lindblad, Andrea Lee, Allisen Corpuz, Lilia Vu and the lone North Carolinian in the field, Allison Emrey, of Charlotte.
