No. 6 Duke runs overpowers Providence, 20-8

DURHAM, N.C. Freshman attackman Justin Guterding posted six goals while senior faceoff specialist Jack Rowe won 18-of-20 draws as the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils defeated the visiting Providence Friars, 20-8, at West Campus Turf Fields on Sunday.

The win marks Duke’s 20th straight home victory and the Blue Devils will attempt to match the school record of 21 on Saturday against Loyola.

The Blue Devils (5-1) jumped on the Friars (2-2) early by scoring four goals in the first four minutes of the contest.

Duke built a 13-2 lead at intermission.

Seven different Blue Devils scored in the opening half with Deemer Class and Guterding picking up three apiece.

Duke received a three-goal, three-assist outing from Class as he became the 45th player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau.

In 47 career games, the Baltimore, Md., native has 62 goals and 42 assists for 104 points.

Additionally, Myles Jones chipped in three goals and one helper while Chad Cohan and Jack Bruckner posted two goals each.

Rowe, in addition to his 18 faceoff wins and 13 ground balls registered his first career point with an assist to Bruckner in the first quarter.

Rookie Matthew Giampetroni and junior Alex Prezioso tallied their first career goals, while Peter Welch dished out his first career assist.

In goal, starter Luke Aaron made four saves while Danny Fowler was credited with seven stops.

Kyle Rowe went 4-of-6 at the X and picked up four ground balls.

Duke finished with a commanding 42-19 edge in ground balls.

Guterding, who had six goals and three assists in Duke’s 21-14 win over No. 13 Harvard on Saturday, now leads the Blue Devils with 26 goals on the year.

With his three-goal outing versus Providence, Jones has scored three-plus goals in five of Duke’s six games this season.

Providence, coached by former Blue Devil assistant Chris Gabrielli, was paced by Buck McClure’s two goals and one assist while Greg Fitzmaurice contributed a pair of tallies.

Friar goalkeeper Peter Badgley made 11 saves in the losing effort.

No. 5 Duke WLAX rolls past No. 16 Notre Dame, 17-3

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Katie Trees tallied a career-high seven points and Duke’s defense held No. 16 Notre Dame scoreless for nearly 16 minutes out of the gate in a 17-3 victory on a rainy afternoon at the West Campus Turf Fields on Sunday.

Led by senior Kerrin Maurer in the circle, the fifth-ranked Blue Devils also won the draw control by a 16-6 margin to start the ACC portion of their season at 1-0.

The squad improved to 6-0 overall for the program’s best start since 2006.

“We’ve played in a lot of cold games this year and so far the weather has not been great,” Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel said.

“I thought our kids just did an awesome job of putting that all aside and doing what we had to do and playing smart. When you have games like this you have to take good care of the ball. Obviously it was sloppy at times for both teams. But I was really proud of our effort.”

Notre Dame starting goalkeeper Liz O’Sullivan made four saves to open the contest before Trees initiated a 6-0 scoring run for Duke.

The Blue Devils also won eight of the game’s first nine draw controls to fuel the strong start.

Cortney Fortunato got the Irish on the board with a free position goal midway through the half, but Trees and Maurer countered with two goals each to extend Duke’s lead to 10-1 at the break.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea made seven of her eight saves during the first half as she and the defense limited Notre Dame to just the one score on eight shots.

The Blue Devils wasted little time in pushing the lead to 10, as freshman Kyra Harney put away a pass from senior Taylor Trimble just 34 seconds into the second period.

The Irish’s Fortunato broke through for two more tallies over the next 15 minutes, but Duke’s attack continued to fire on all cylinders.

Senior Brigid Smith logged three of her four goals inside the final 19 minutes, and Harney, Trees and senior Erin Tenneson also found the back of the net to help the squad reach the 17-goal mark for the second consecutive outing.

Smith led all players with five ground balls and Harney picked up four as the Blue Devils totaled 24 ground balls on the day to nine by the Irish.

Senior defender Gabby Moise accounted for three caused turnovers and Trees added two.

Notre Dame’s three goals matched a season-low output by an opponent against the Duke defense.

“We dominated the draw and ground balls,” Kimel said.

“Defensively, I thought we held really strong. We really made them work for their opportunities … I can’t enough about how proud I am of our team that they really played so tough. I think it says a lot about the character of our team.”

Maurer finished with a career-best eight draw controls in addition to three assists, while Trees (5) and Smith (4) both secured hat tricks.

As a team, Duke outshot Notre Dame, 31-14 and went 8-of-14 in clearing attempts to a 5-of-10 clearing effort by the Irish.

O’Sullivan and Jennifer Blum split time in goal for Notre Dame, with O’Sullivan making six stops and Blum two in the loss.

The Blue Devils continue conference play on Friday, when they host Virginia Tech at Koskinen Stadium.

No. 2 UNC WLAX downs Elon, 21-2

CHAPEL HILL , N.C. – Second-ranked North Carolina got multiple goals from seven different players and dominated Elon, 21-2, in the cold and rain at Navy Field on Sunday.

The Tar Heels outshot the Phoenix 46-8 in the game and controlled the draw throughout much of the contest by an 18-7 margin.

Eleven Tar Heels scored goals in the contest, led by senior Lindsay Scott who led Carolina with four goals and an assist.

Sydney Holman and Sam McGee (2 goals, 3 assists apiece) both tallied five points, with Aly Messinger adding three goals to along with two goals apiece from Ela Hazar, Brittney Coppa and Carly Reed.

Elon got goals from Elle Hvozdovic and Sloane Kessler and an assist from Nicole Sinacori.

The Tar Heels dominated from start to finish, out-shooting the Phoenix, 28-1, and winning 14 of 17 draws in the opening half.

Lindsay Scott and Messinger had hat tricks in the first alone, and Holman had two goals and three assists in the opening 30 minutes.

Caylee Waters (4-1) started in goal and played the first half, saving the only shot Elon attempted against her.

Megan Ward played the second half in the cage, allowing two goals and making two saves in the final 30:00.

The Tar Heels led 6-0 after less than 10 minutes of play and had a 16-0 lead at the break.

Carolina will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia at Fetzer Field.
