Duke freshman Leona Maguire named ACC Golfer of the Month

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coming off registering her first collegiate victory along with a tied third place finish this past month, Duke University freshman Leona Maguire has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Golfer of the Month for March, as announced on Thursday.

Maguire, who is a native of Cavan, Ireland, turned in rounds of 73, 65 and 69 for a three-day ledger of 207 at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

With birdies on the 16th and 18th holes coming in, Maguire finished with a six-under-par, 207, to place tied first with LSU’s Madeline Sagstrom.

Maguire then sank a birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Sagstrom.

Maguire’s play helped lead Duke to the overall team title as well, which marked the second Blue Devil victory of the season.

For the month, Maguire totaled a 70.0 stroke average as she also collected a tied third place finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.

Following the one round of stroke-play qualifying, the Blue Devils advanced to match play where Maguire notched a 2-1 record.

As a team, Duke placed third overall with a 2-1 mark.

Three Blue Devils on midseason lacrosse All-America lists

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Blue Devils senior attacker Kerrin Maurer, junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea and senior midfielder Katie Trees have been named to Inside Lacrosse’s midseason All-America lists, as announced by the publication on Thursday.

Maurer, a second team IWLCA All-America selection in 2014, was joined by Duryea on the midseason first team and Trees appeared on the honorable mention list.

Maurer was also on the Inside Lacrosse preseason All-America first team earlier this spring while Duryea was tabbed honorable mention.

Duke’s leader in points, goals, assists and draw controls, Maurer has posted four hat tricks and eight multiple-assist efforts this season while guiding the Blue Devils to an 11-1 ledger.

The Setauket, N.Y., native was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week Feb. 24 after pacing the attack with 10 points in wins over No. 5 Northwestern and William & Mary.

Maurer, who also appears on the 2015 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, has climbed the Duke and ACC record books in her final campaign, ranking third in program history in career points (254) and second in career assists (110).

She enters the weekend tied for eighth in ACC history in career assists and ranks second in the conference this spring in assists per game (1.83).

A three-year starter in the net, Duryea continues to be one of the ACC’s top goalkeepers in 2015.

She currently tops the conference and ranks in the top-10 nationally with a 6.66 goals against average and a .516 save percentage.

A product of Beverly, Mass., Duryea earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice in February, and along with the Duke defensive unit, has limited 10 of 12 opponents on the year to single-digit scoring.

She ranks sixth all-time in program history in career saves with 368 in her three seasons.

Trees has come on strong in her final season, ranking second on the team in draw controls (22) and caused turnovers (11) and fourth in goals (20) and points (28).

She scored a career-high five goals in a 17-3 victory over Notre Dame March 1 and registered game-winners against Elon, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

The senior from San Diego, Calif., has totaled four draw controls in three different contests this spring and has already notched career-highs in the goals, assists and points categories.

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils face a tough ACC road test this weekend, traveling to face No. 3 Boston College on Saturday.

Lambert posts game-high six assists in McDonald’s All-America game

CHICAGO, ILL. – Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball incoming freshman Kyra Lambert registered a game-high six assists in the 2015 McDonald’s All-America game which was played at the United Center on Wednesday.

Lambert, who is a native of Cibolo, Texas, played 14 minutes for the West Team as she dished six assists, had one block and pulled down two rebounds.

She scored one point on the night as well.  The East squad netted an 89-87 victory over the West team.

The five-foot-nine-inch point guard also competed in the Powerade Jamfest Skills Competition and finished second, while placing third in the three-point competition during the week.

Along with Lambert in the 2015 Blue Devils incoming class includes Angela Salvadores (Spain), Faith Suggs (Illinois), Crystal Primm (Florida) and Haley Gorecki (Illinois).
