ACC Men’s Lacrosse to be prominently showcased on ESPNU and ESPN3
GREENSBORO, N.C. – ESPN announced Tuesday its broadcast schedule for the 2015 college lacrosse season, and the ACC will be prominently featured throughout on ESPNU and ESPN3.
Thirty-one (31) of the 47 regular-season broadcasts on ESPNU or ESPN3 will feature at least one ACC team, while 10 ACC games will be showcased on ESPNU. All three games of the 2015 ACC Men’s Lacrosse Championship at PPL Park will air on ESPNU for a total of 34 broadcasts throughout the 2015 season. All five ACC teams will make at least five appearances on an ESPN platform this season.
All five ACC men’s lacrosse teams are ranked in the Top 9 of the Preseason Inside Lacrosse and USILA polls led by No. 2/2 Notre Dame. Two-time defending NCAA Champion Duke is No. 3/3, followed by No. 4/4 Syracuse, No. 5/6 North Carolina and No. 9/9 Virginia.
The ACC also combines for 23 honorees on Inside Lacrosse’s Preseason All-America Team, including a national-best six on the first team, five on the second and third teams, and seven honorable mention selections. Fourteen of the ACC’s 23 Preseason All-Americans were named to the USILA All-America Team last season include all six Preseason First Team honorees: Duke junior midfielders Deemer Class and Myles Jones, Notre Dame junior attackman Matt Kavanagh, Syracuse senior attackman Kevin Rice and junior defenseman Brandon Mullins, and Virginia junior defenseman Tanner Scales.

North Carolina and Syracuse picked first in ACC Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina and Syracuse have been selected as the preseason favorites in the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll.
The Orange and the Tar Heels each received four first-place votes and 59 points in the balloting among the ACC’s eight head coaches. Two points separated the third, fourth and fifth place teams selected in the predicted order of finish as Duke was picked third (40), Virginia fourth (39) and Boston College (38) fifth. Notre Dame (29) was picked to finish sixth, ACC newcomer Louisville (16) seventh and Virginia Tech (8) eighth.
The Preseason All-ACC Team features six returning First- and-Second Team All-Americans as selected by the IWLCA. Seven of the eight ACC institutions were recognized on the Preseason All-ACC Team, led by Boston College and North Carolina each with three selections. Duke had two student-athletes named to the team, while Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia each had one student-athlete tabbed.
Returning IWLCA First Team All-Americans named to the Preseason All-ACC Team include Syracuse junior attacker Kayla Treanor, who was also the 2014 IWLCA Attacker of the Year, and Boston College senior midfielder Mikaela Rix. Rounding out the Preseason All-ACC Team are Boston College junior midfielder Sarah Mannelly, Duke senior midfielder Taylor Trimble, North Carolina senior midfielder Brittany Coppa, senior defender Caileigh Sindall and sophomore goalie Caylee Waters, and Notre Dame senior defender Barbara Sullivan.
North Carolina kicked the 2015 season off with a 13-9 win over James Madison, while the remaining seven ACC teams will open their seasons this weekend. The ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship will be played April 23, 24 & 26 on the campus of the University of Virginia.

George, Haus, Rowe selected 2015 Duke Captains
DURHAM, N.C. — The trio of seniors Justin George, Will Haus, and Jack Rowe were selected by their teammates to lead the Duke men’s lacrosse team as captains for the 2015 season. The Blue Devils open the campaign Saturday, Feb. 7 at High Point. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m.
George, a Baltimore, Md., native, is a midfielder for the Blue Devils. A strong leader by example, he has played in 21 games in his career and handed out four assists. His leadership extends off the field for the Blue Devils as a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Duke’s defensive midfield anchor, Haus starts his senior season as a preseason All-America pick. He has played in 61 career games and was a USILA All-America honorable mention pick after helping Duke to the 2014 NCAA title. He tallied 11 goals and four assists in 2014, including a highlight-reel goal in the title game against Notre Dame. He also is successful in the classroom, earning ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition in each of his seasons.
Rowe, Duke’s top returning faceoff specialist, brings a great personality and work ethic to the program. Playing behind Duke’s marathon man Brendan Fowler for the previous two seasons, he has taken 49 faceoffs in his career, winning 23. He is joined on the team this season by his brother, Kyle, who led Stony Brook at the X last season.
Duke, ranked third in the preseason polls, opens the 2015 campaign with a pair of games in two days. The Blue Devils make their debut at Koskinen Stadium Feb. 8 versus Air Force at 12 pm.

Maurer, Trimble named to Preseason All-ACC Team
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke seniors Kerrin Maurer and Taylor Trimble were selected to the 2015 Preseason All-ACC Women’s Lacrosse Team, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. In addition, the Blue Devils were picked to finish third in the ACC by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.
A year after compiling an 11-8 record and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the 10th consecutive season, head coach Kerstin Kimel’s squad received 40 points in the 2015 preseason poll. North Carolina and Syracuse tied for first in the predicted order of finish, with both teams receiving four first-place votes and 59 points overall. Duke was voted third, followed by Virginia (39 points) and Boston College (38 points).
Notre Dame finished sixth in the preseason polling (29 points), while Louisville was selected seventh (16 points) and Virginia Tech eighth (8 points).
Maurer and Trimble represented the Blue Devils on the preseason squad after both garnered all-conference recognition in 2014. Both players were IWLCA All-South Region selections last spring, with Maurer also earning IWLCA second team All-America recognition.
Duke opens the 2015 campaign on the road, traveling to Elon Saturday, Feb. 7 for a 1 p.m. matchup. The contest will be streamed live here.
Also announced Tuesday was ESPN’s spring broadcast schedule, with three of the Blue Devils’ home tilts slated to be streamed on ESPN3. Duke’s ACC opener against Notre Dame March 1 will be broadcast on ESPN3, as will an April 17 meeting with North Carolina and the regular season finale against Johns Hopkins May 3.

UNC WLAX opens season with 13-9 win over JMU
CHAPEL HILL, N.C – The second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (1-0) got four goals and an assist from sophomore transfer Alex Moore and opened its 2015 season with a 13-9 victory over the James Madison Dukes (0-1) at Fetzer Field on Sunday.
Molly Hendrick and Brittney Coppa both scored twice for the Tar Heels, who improved to 16-4 in season openers and 4-2 against James Madison in the first meeting between the schools since 2002.
The Tar Heels led, 6-5, at halftime before allowing JMU to take a 7-6 lead on back-to-back goals by Jaci Gordon and Leah Monticello in the first seven minutes of the second half.
Carolina then went on a 5-0 run in the next nine minutes with Moore scoring three of those goals to help put it out of reach.
Eight different Tar Heels scored goals in the victory.
In addition to Moore, Copa and Hendrick, Carolina got single goals from Sammy Jo Tracy, Aly Messinger, Marie McCool, Kelly Devlin and Ela Hazar.
Carly Reed and Sydney Holman dished out assists for UNC.
Several Tar Heels made their official returns to the field after missing last season due to injury, including Tracy (foot), Holman (knee), Coppa (knee) and Devlin (knee).
Monticello led the Dukes with four goals, while Stephanie Finley had two goals and an assist.
Ali Curwin had one goal and one assist, Jaci Gordon and Brooks Lawler each scored once and Carter Reifsnder had an assist.
Sophomore Caylee Waters started the game in goal for North Carolina and played the first half, allowing five goals and making three saves.
Megan Ward (1-0) played the second half and allowed four goals while making four saves.
Schylar Healy went the distance in the cage for James Madison, making 11 saves and allowing 13 goals.
Carolina will return to action Saturday at Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
