Tar Heels forward Mavunga earns ACC honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina forward Stephanie Mavunga was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Mavunga led the eighth-ranked Tar Heels to three wins last week, including a 72-56 victory over N.C. State on Sunday in the conference opener for both clubs.

The sophomore from Brownsburg, Ind., averaged 21.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.3 blocks per game.

Mavunga set a career-high with 26 points on 13-of-14 shooting against ETSU on Jan. 2, and opened the week with 14 points and nine rebounds against Albany on Dec. 30.

Against the Wolfpack, Mavunga put together a 23-point, 12-rebound, five-assist and four-block performance on Jan. 4, improving Carolina to 14-1 on the season.

Mavunga shot 76 percent from the field for the week, and averaged 24.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and shot 82.1% from the floor over the final two games against ETSU and NC State.

She is averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds for the year.
