No. 6 Duke powers past No. 16 Stony Brook, 17-11

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (9-4) overpowered the 16th-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves (10-4), posting a 17-11 road win at LaValle P. Stadium on Wednesday.

Continuing on his recent scoring streak, Jack Bruckner scored five goals along with an assist, and followed up on a seven-goal performance against Virginia on Sunday that started Duke’s recent two-win stretch over four days.

In front of 4,860 in attendance, Duke’s defense, led by goalkeeper Danny Fowler (10 saves) who recorded his second consecutive win, held Stony Brook scoreless through most of the final quarter of play.

Attackman Case Matheis joined Bruckner with a game and career-high six points (3 goals, 3 assists), while Myles Jones, Deemer Class, and Justin Guterding all posted identical three-goal, two-assist finishes.

Subbing in for brother Jack who’s carried the faceoff load much of the season for the Blue Devils, sophomore Kyle Rowe claimed 18-of-20 draws at the faceoff X against his former team.

Rowe spent his rookie season with the Seawolves and transferred to Duke last summer.

Mike Rooney (3 goals, 2 assists) and Challen Rogers (2 goals, 2 assists) led the Seawolves offense, while Hayden Johnstone made seven saves in the losing effort.

Though trailing 3-2 early, the Blue Devils put together an eight-goal run and led 10-3 with 7:51 to play in the second quarter.

Though Stony Brook answered with a five-goal run, Duke led 10-8 at halftime.

The Seawolves never got closer than two goals as the Blue Devils outscored them by a four-goal margin during the final two quarters of play.

The Blue Devils next travel to face No. 15 Marquette on Saturday.
