EDMONTON, ALBERTA – Andrej Sekera scored 2:47 into the overtime period and gave the Edmonton Oilers a 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Rexall Place on Monday.

The former Hurricanes defenseman found open ice, followed up on his own rebound, and beat Carolina goaltender Cam Ward to post his fifth goal of the season.

The win evened the season series between the two teams as Carolina (16-17-7) beat the Oilers 4-1 at PNC Arena on Nov. 25.

Ward made 26 saves in the loss, while winning goaltender Cam Talbot’s 29 saves earned him his first shutout of the season.

Even while earning a point, the Hurricanes outshot the Oilers (17-21-3), but didn’t score a goal – the first time they have done so since suffering a 2-0 loss to Florida back on Dec. 18.

Carolina continues its travels West to Vancouver and will face off against the Canucks (15-16-9) on Wednesday.
