A look back: No. 9 Tar Heels run past Wolfpack, 72-56

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The then ninth-ranked UNC Tar Heels overwhelmed the visiting N.C. State Wolfpack early on and cruised to a 72-56 win in front of 5,421 in attendance at Carmichael Arena on Sunday.

As both teams faced each other in their Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season-opener, the Tar Heels (14-1, 1-0) led by as many as 27 points before the Wolfpack (9-5, 0-1) put together a respectable finish, scoring 25 of the game’s final 39 points.

Double-double performances from Stephanie Mavunga (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Allisha Gray (13 points, 12 rebounds), along with Brittany Rountree’s 14 points led the Tar Heels offense.

Dominique Wilson posted a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists to keep the Wolfpack close, while Miah Spencer (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Len’Nique Brown (11 points, 6 rebounds) supported the effort.

North Carolina shot 27-of-60 (.450) from the field and 11-of-17 (.647) from the free throw line, while N.C. State finished 20-of-66 (.303) and 12-of-17 (.706) respectively.
