RALEIGH, N.C. – With all 30 NHL teams required to submit their season-opening rosters by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the Carolina Hurricanes continued to shape theirs on Monday.
The Hurricanes first announced that forwards Zach Boychuk and Chad LaRose would be assigned to the Charlotte Checkers, the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.
Boychuk was to be assigned on Tuesday pending waivers, and LaRose, who has an AHL contract with Charlotte, was released from his professional tryout with Carolina.
With Monday being a scheduled off-day following a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals, Carolina had 22 players remaining in camp, one less than the desired 23 that head coach Bill Peters had indicated he would like to have when talking about it on Saturday.
Later in the day, following further diagnosis of injured forward Jeff Skinner, the team announced that its top goal scorer from a year ago had suffered a concussion as a result of a hit he sustained just 12 seconds into the game against Washington.
“Jeff has been diagnosed with a concussion,” Hurricanes executive vice president and general manager Ron Francis said.
“He will continue to be monitored by our team doctors and go through proper protocols in the coming days.”
Skinner sustained the injury from a hit by Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen immediately following an offensive-zone faceoff during Sunday’s exhibition game at Verizon Center.
No penalty was assessed on the play.
Subsequently, the team recalled forward Patrick Brown from Charlotte who would join the team for practice on Tuesday.
With the addition of Brown, the team’s roster pushed back up to 23 players as it prepares for its opening night game against the New York Islanders on Friday.
