RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes assigned six players to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Monday.

Following back-to-back exhibition game wins over the New York Islanders (5-3) on Saturday and the Ottawa Senators (2-1) on Sunday, the team’s roster was trimmed down to 27 players.

“We’re still in the early part of building a foundation,” Peters said following the win over Ottawa.

“I’m sure we’ll make some decisions here roster-wise, earlier this week, sooner rather than later. Then try to get down to a manageable number, down to one group.”

The moves Peters referred to came quickly following the team’s return to Raleigh as defenseman Trevor Carrick and forwards Brendan Woods, Sergey Tolchinsky and Phil Di Giuseppe were assigned to Charlotte’s training camp which opens on Tuesday.

Goaltender Drew MacIntyre and forward Brody Sutter were also to be assigned to the Checkers on Tuesday, pending waivers.

The Hurricanes will play their final two preseason games at PNC Arena when they host the Washington Capitals on Wednesday and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.

Following those games, Carolina will make adjustments soon afterwards to finalize its season-opening roster of 23 players.
