Hurricanes trade Dalpe, Welsh for Tochkin and draft pick

Carolina sends Zac Dalpe and Jeremy Welsh to Vancouver for Kellan Tochkin and fourth-round pick

RALEIGH, N.C. Carolina Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced on Sunday that the team had acquired forward Kellan Tochkin and a fourth-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forwards Zac Dalpe and Jeremy Welsh.

Tochkin, 22, totaled 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists) and 61 penalty minutes in 56 games played with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League (CHL) in 2012-13.

Originally signed by Vancouver as an undrafted free agent in July 2009, Tochkin (5’10”, 176 lbs.) played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Everett, Medicine Hat and Prince Albert prior to turning pro, totaling 243 points (91 goals, 152 assists) in 253 career WHL games played.

Tochkin led all WHL rookies in scoring in 2008-09 with 74 points (20 goals, 54 assists) in 72 games.

A second-round (45th overall) draft pick of the Hurricanes in 2008, Dalpe, 23, had recorded 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in 41 games played at the NHL level while finishing with 131 points (62 goals, 69 assists) in 171 games played with the team’s AHL affiliate club, the Charlotte Checkers.

Welsh, 25, was signed by Carolina as an undrafted free agent back in April 2012, and played in a total of six NHL games, tallying 1 assist while recording 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 69 AHL games played with Charlotte.

Coming off the end of his collegiate career with Union College, Welsh finished with 100 points (53 goals, 47 assists) in 119 games played.
