RALEIGH, N.C. – With the NHL free agency signing period approaching on July 1, the Carolina Hurricanes created an uptick on the newswire on Tuesday when they announced that forward Alexander Semin was placed on unconditional waivers.

Per the team’s release, Semin was notified of the club’s decision on Tuesday, and per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he would need to clear waivers at Noon on Wednesday prior to being bought out.

The team’s buyout of the remaining three years of a five-year contract worth $35 million, would be disbursed at $2.333 million over the next six years.

Even with a 40-goal season to go with two at 30-plus and four more at 20-plus goals per season in the NHL, the now low-producing Russian sniper couldn’t connect more than six times on the 93 shots he put on net during the 2014-2015 season, his 10th in the league.

He added 13 assists and finished with 19 points and a minus-10 rating in 57 games.

Trying to recover and play through a wrist injury as well as being a healthy scratch throughout the year, Semin’s production was considerably lower than his first two seasons playing with the Hurricanes.

Over three seasons, Semin posted 41 goals and 64 assists (105 points) and a plus-5 rating in 166 games total games played with the team.
