RALEIGH, N.C. – It didn’t even take the entire game against the Minnesota Wild for the Carolina Hurricanes to announce that starting goaltender Cam Ward would miss up to a month due to a lower-body injury he suffered during the first period of play on Thursday in St. Paul, Minn.

While the game was barely halfway played with backup Justin Peters taking Ward’s place in net, the Hurricanes released a statement that the veteran goalie would be expected to miss three to four weeks due to the injury that he incurred while moving into position to make a save during the fourth minute of play.

As a result of Ward’s injury, the Hurricanes will recall goaltender Mike Murphy from their affiliate club, the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL), prior to Friday night’s game in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche.

Murphy, 24, is 1-2-0 with a 3.81 goals-against average in three games played with Charlotte this season, and has appeared in two career NHL games with the Hurricanes, playing for 36 minutes without allowing a goal.
