RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes announced their latest round of cuts from training camp on Friday.
Sixteen players were released, with 14 of them assigned to the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
Forwards Erik Karlsson, Patrick Brown, Kyle Hagel and Carter Sandlak; defensemen Danny Biega, Keegan Lowe, Tyler Ganly and Jake Chelios; and goaltenders Rasmus Tirronen and Daniel Altshuller would report to begin training camp with the Checkers starting on Tues., Sept. 29.
Pending clearing waivers, forwards T.J. Hensick, Zach Boychuk and Justin Shugg, along with defenseman Rasmus Rissanen would join that group in Charlotte as well.
Forward Lucas Wallmark was assigned to Lulea of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), while defenseman Roland McKeown was returned to his junior team, the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
Following the first week of camp, Carolina’s roster now sits at 33 players, an NHL-experienced group with a few handfuls of prospects that practiced and departed on Friday for a weekend set of exhibition games against the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators.
The Hurricanes will face off against the Islanders in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Saturday, and match up with the Senators in St. Johns, Newfoundland on Sunday.
