Duke Earns 98 Percent Graduation Success Rate

DURHAM, N.C. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its most recent statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) on Thursday.

The report indicated that the percentage of freshmen student-athletes receiving scholarship aid or recruited individuals participating in programs that do not offer athletic aid graduated from Duke within six years at a rate of 98 percent, from UNC-Chapel Hill at an 86 percent rate, and from NC State at an 82 percent rate.

The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in 2003-2006 and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left their school in good academic standing.

The NCAA GSR average is 82 percent.

A total of 17 Duke teams achieved a 100 percent GSR: baseball, men’s basketball, men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, men’s cross country/track and field, women’s basketball, women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, women’s cross country/track and field and volleyball.

Both Duke men’s and women’s remaining programs – football (92), men’s lacrosse (95), wrestling (97), women’s rowing (95) and women’s golf (83) – all achieved a GSR of 83 percent of better.

UNC GSR’s for men’s and women’s basketball were 90 and 79 percent respectively, while football achieved a GSR of 65 percent.

NC State men’s and women’s basketball attained a GSR of 89 and 86 percent respectively while football’s GSR was 64 percent.

A total of 10 UNC teams achieved a 100 percent GSR: men’s fencing, men’s tennis, crew/rowing, women’s fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, women’s golf, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, and volleyball.

A total of four NC State teams achieved a 100 percent GSR: men’s golf, women’s golf, gymnastics, and mixed rifle.

In addition, the Federal Graduation Rates were also released and Duke freshmen scholarship athletes that enrolled in 2002-05 posted a four-year class average of 86 percent, while UNC freshman scholarship athletes posted a 72 percent average, and NC State freshmen scholarship athletes posted a 63 percent average.

The Federal Graduation Rate does not allow for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left school in good academic standing, and only includes scholarship student-athletes.
