Carolina Hurricanes set to begin training camp

Team’s first on-ice sessions will take place in two groups on Thursday at PNC Arena

RALEIGH, NCAfter attending weeks of informal skates at their practice facility, Raleigh Center Ice, Carolina Hurricanes players will be put to the test and compete for jobs at the team’s training camp which opens on Wednesday.

President and general manager Jim Rutherford announced the team’s training camp roster on Monday which consists of 48 players including four goaltenders, 17 defensemen and 27 forwards.

Players will undergo physicals and take team photos during the first day and will then hit the ice in two groups beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday at PNC Arena.

Twelve players who represented the Hurricanes during this week’s NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich. will join the main camp and includes forwards Elias Lindholm, Brody Sutter, Victor Rask, Brock McGinn, Brendan Woods and Sergey Tolchinsky; and defensemen Ryan Murphy, Danny Biega, Keegan Lowe, Trevor Carrick, Austin Levi and Beau Schmitz.

The team will host its annual season kick-off event for its fans, the Caniac Carnival, at PNC Arena on Sunday which will include a Red-White scrimmage taking place at 1 p.m.

Carolina will play six preseason games, beginning and ending at PNC Arena when the Hurricanes face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 18 and the Buffalo Sabres on Sept. 27.

Once training camp and the preseason ends, the Hurricanes opening-day roster will begin the 2013-14 regular season at home against the Detroit Red Wings on Fri., Oct. 4, with puck drop at 7 p.m.
