No. 14 Tar Heels hit century mark in front of Hatchell

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball team haven’t slowed down for the holidays as six players finished in double figures in a 103-71 win over the High Point Panthers at Carmichael Arena on Saturday.

Xylina McDaniel (16 points, 8 rebounds), Allisha Gray (14 points, 8 rebounds), Danielle Butts (14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals), Jessica Washington (12 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds), Stephanie Mavunga (11 points, 4 rebounds), and Brittany Rountree (11 points, 2 rebounds) all paced North Carolina to its sixth straight win.

As the Tar Heels were on their way to scoring a hundred points or more for the third of their last four games, the Panthers put together a valiant effort with three players finishing in double digits as well, led by Latrice Phelps who tallied a game-high 20 points against North Carolina.

North Carolina finished the game with a 49-percent completion rate from the field with 19 total team assists while dominating High Point on the glass (51-28) to push its overall record to 11-2.

The Tar Heels were able to complete their impressive win in front of head coach Syliva Hatchell who was in attendance at Carmichael to watch her team in person for the first time.

Although Hatchell has been undergoing treatment for Leukemia since October, she has still stayed in regular contact with the team by reviewing practice and game video, speaking multiple times a day with the coaching staff, and having face-to-face meetings with individual players and giving pregame pep talks to the team.

“Patience is one of the hardest things right now for me, because I want so badly to get back with the team,” Hatchell said in a statement released before the game.

“I know I have three more treatments to go through over the next few months. If all goes as planned you could see me back on the bench this season.”
