EDENTON, N.C. – The Holly Springs Salamanders (13-9, 25-25) are taking serious strides back up towards the top of the Coastal Plain League (CPL) East Division standings.

A 2-1 win over the Edenton Steamers (14-8, 34-14) at Hicks Field on Tuesday extended Holly Springs’ current win streak to three games, posting its fifth win in the last seven games.

Holly Springs starter Chandler Sanburn’s one-hitter in seven-innings of work included nine strikeouts and was enough to out-duel the Steamers’ Mike Bittel (3-2, 6 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 3 SO), while Wayne Wages earned his second save of the season.

Joey Roach (2-4, 1 H, 2 RBI), in the designated hitter role, was the catalyst that helped the Salamanders earn the win.

Roach’s fifth homer of the season in the top of the fourth inning brought Drew Butler in with him to put Holly Springs ahead 2-1.

CPL home run leader Chad Sedio went beyond the fence in the bottom of the fourth with his 12th of the season, but that was all Edenton could put together in offense for the remainder of the game.

Though top spot in the standings hasn’t necessarily been the goal for Holly Springs to attain during its first season of play in the CPL, according to Salamanders coach Andrew Ciencin, simply putting all aspects of a game together would translate into success.

Coming out of a four-game losing stretch following the league’s all-star break, it looks as though the Salamanders are back to where they were when they first took over first place during the second half of the season.

Sitting one game behind the Petersburg Generals and Edenton, and with six games remaining in the regular season, the Salamanders look to continue their streak against Wilson when they host the Tobs at the North Main Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
