WASHINGTON, D.C. – Justin Faulk’s snipe from the point decided it in overtime as the Carolina Hurricanes topped the Washington Capitals 2-1 in NHL preseason play at Verizon Center on Monday.

Forward Patrick Brown’s goal late in the first period gave Carolina a 1-0 lead into the third period before the Capitals’ Madison Bowey tied it at the 13:58 mark.

During the overtime period, the Caps’ Chandler Stephenson sat in the penalty box for holding Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin, and allowed the Hurricanes power play to end it with Faulk’s shot that beat former Hurricanes goaltender Drew MacIntyre with eight seconds remaining.

Forward Andrew Poturalski and defenseman Jake Chelios earned assists on the play that gave Carolina the win to support the efforts of goaltenders Eddie Lack (16-16, 40 minutes) and Alex Nedeljkovic (9-10, 24:52) who split duties in the contest.
