PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Prior to the puck dropping between the Carolina Hurricanes and host Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Monday, a retirement ceremony was held for current Hurricanes assistant coach and former Flyers forward Rod Brind’Amour.

“It’s tough to put into words really,” Brind’Amour said when speaking to the media prior to the ceremony.

“It’s been a long time since I played here. It’s just a special honor. Philadelphia meant so much to me as a player, playing here as long as I did. It’s still a big part of me. With the history of this franchise, to be included in this way, it’s just a great honor.”

Brind’Amour, the ninth overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1988 NHL Draft, compiled 235 goals and 366 assists for 601 points over parts of nine seasons in 633 games played with Philadelphia, beginning in 1991 when he was traded there.

He then spent his final 10 NHL seasons in Carolina, compiling another 473 points (174g, 299a) in 694 games while captaining the Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup during the 2005-2006 season.

Overall, Brind’Amour posted 1,184 points (452g, 732a) over 1,484 regular-season appearances, and added 51 goals and 60 assists (111 points) in 159 playoff contests.

In addition to lifting the Stanley Cup, he finished his playing career as a two-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner, NHL All-Star, and IIHF World Championship gold medalist.
