RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes announced Thursday that the team had traded goaltender Eddie Lack, defenseman Ryan Murphy and a seventh-round pick in the 2019 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, to Calgary in exchange for defenseman Keegan Kanzig and the Flames’ sixth-round pick in 2019.
Kanzig, 22, a third-round Flames pick (67th overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft completed his first professional season in 2016-17 season, splitting the year between the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Adirondack Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
He tallied two assists in six games with Stockton, and posted one goal and four assists (5 points) in 40 games played with Adirondack.
Prior to turning pro, Kanzig (6’7”, 247 lbs.) played five seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL), scoring 19 goals, earning 40 assists (59 points) and accumulating 565 penalty minutes in 319 regular-season games with Victoria and Calgary.
As part of the trade, Carolina retained 50% of Lack’s salary.
The 29-year-old Lack has played four seasons in the NHL and heads to Calgary following a 2016-2017 season during which he posted eight wins in 19 games along with a .902 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average.
Lack holds a career 54-51 record in 136 games with a .911 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA.
Murphy, 24, the Hurricanes’ first pick (12th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, split the 2016-17 season between the Hurricanes and the team’s AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
He played 27 games for Carolina and tallied two assists in addition to one assist earned in seven games with Charlotte.
Murphy has netted six goals and 31 assists for 37 points and 38 penalty minutes in 151 career NHL games.
Update: Calgary placed Murphy on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout on Friday.
