BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Carolina Hurricanes selected defenseman Jake Bean with their first selection, 13th overall, at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft held at First Niagara Center on Friday.

Bean, a six-foot, 173-pound left shot was described as “a puck-moving defenseman comfortable at both ends of the ice” according to NHL Central Scouting pre-draft notes.

“It’s pretty special,” Bean said when asked of his reaction in being selected by Carolina.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity. It’s a really cool day for me and my family.”

Bean finished first among Western Hockey League (WHL) defensemen with 24 goals, added 40 assists, and tallied 12 power-play goals in 68 games for the Calgary Hitmen in 2015-16 earning WHL (East) Second All-Star Team honors.

Director of NHL Central Scouting Dan Marr had the following to say of Bean: “He is poised in all aspects of the game, has an excellent shot and can score from the point or off the rush. He has good playmaking ability and a strong game at the offensive blue line. He’s capable of becoming a game-breaker.”
