CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked and defending NCAA-champion North Carolina Tar Heels (1-0) will play their second game of the season when it hosts the Boston University Terries (0-0) at Navy Field on Saturday.
The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was delayed because of travel issues for the Terriers due to wintry weather on the East coast.
BU will be playing its season opener and was originally scheduled to fly to North Carolina on Thursday, but a recent snow and ice storm had their flight canceled.
The storm also impacted the playability of Fetzer Field, and as a result, the game will be played on the synthetic practice surface.
The Tar Heels opened their 2014 season with a 20-8 win over fourth-ranked Florida at home on Fetzer Field last Saturday, and will look forward to facing off against the Terriers who lead the all-time series with the Tar Heels by a margin of 3-2.
Both teams will face one another for the first time since the Terriers earned a 7-6 win over the Tar Heels on Mar. 11, 2006.
Holding a 2-1 advantage at home, the Tar Heels will rely on recent Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Players of the Week, Abbey Friend (Offensive Player of the Week ) and Megan Ward ( Defensive Player of the Week), along with freshman attacker Sydney Holman to earn another win at home.
Friend led UNC on the attack and tied for game-high honors with five goals, two assists and seven points in the victory over the Gators.
Ward, a sophomore goalkeeper went the distance in the cage for the Tar Heels, making nine saves and limiting the Gators (who averaged nearly 15 goals per game last season) to just eight goals.
Holman totaled an impressive game-high five goals and two assists in making her collegiate debut with the Tar Heels.
