RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Tuesday that the team had hired David Marcoux as its new goaltending coach.
“David has 25 years of experience as a goalie coach, and his results speak for themselves,” executive vice president and general manager Ron Francis said.
“This completes what we feel is a very strong and experienced coaching staff.”
After Francis introduced Bill Peters as Carolina’s new head coach on June 20th, assistant coach Steve Smith was subsequently hired to join the new staff that included the Hurricanes’ other assistant, Rod Brind’Amour, the lone holdover from the previous group led by Kirk Muller who was fired in early May.
Marcoux spent six years as the goaltending coach for the Calgary Flames between 2003 and 2009, and during that period helped Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff become a Vezina Trophy and Williams Jennings Trophy winner, as well as a Hart Trophy finalist in 2005-06.
In addition to Kiprusoff, Marcoux’s time with the Flames included experience working with current Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward, as the Hurricanes and Flames shared the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Lowell Lock Monsters during the 2004-05 National Hockey League (NHL) work stoppage.
Prior to joining Calgary, Marcoux spent 12 years guiding netminders at a sports academy (Profil Hockey Cap-Jeunesse) in St-Jerome, Quebec.
He also held the goaltender coach position for the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1997-2001, helping Hull twice reach the league finals.
A graduate of the University of Sherbrooke with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Physical Education), Marcoux earned a Masters degree from the University of Montreal in 1997.
Most recently, Marcoux ran his own goaltending camps in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Hawkesbury, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta, and has worked as a goaltending consultant for Hockey Canada.
