Hurricanes post-prospect camp notes leading up to Traverse City

2013 Carolina Hurricanes Prospect Scrimmage
Peter Koutroumpis, Triangle Sports Network

As I sat alongside Carolina Hurricanes executive vice president and assistant general manager Jason Karmanos last month on the final day of the team’s prospect camp, I asked him what the purpose of making the change to this year’s camp was intended to accomplish.

“It’s more helping them more along with their development, both on and off the ice, in that long range process of becoming an NHL player,” Karmanos said.

Over the past few years, the team’s young draftees had been invited on a most-recently drafted order rather than mixing prospects selected from as many five NHL drafts which is what the camp consisted of this year.

Instead of just watching the classes led by 2013 top pick Elias Lindholm coupled with the 2012 group that Phillip Di Giuseppe was selected with, the group included skaters from as far back as the 2009 draft, with Rasmus Rissanen claiming the ‘elder statesman’ position on the camp roster from that year.

With impressive showings by draft picks (Brock McGinn) and invitees (Sergey Tolchinsky) alike, it seemed that the organization came upon a good formula to introduce, enhance, and possibly even accelerate their young players’ development for the future.

Tony MacDonald, director of amateur scouting echoed Karmanos’ point on what the players would draw from by the end of it all.

“People are at different stages of their development, so you’ve gotta’ pretty broad range here,” MacDonald said.

“It allows them to sort of compare themselves to their peers that are playing at a higher level and guys who are older and are more experienced. It’s a pretty good learning experience for everyone involved.”

Indeed this year’s prospect camp provided more depth of experience and skill for the organization, assembled media and fans to witness, and was a better measuring stick to see how far some of the team’s young talent has come.

The next test in earning a spot at the Hurricanes full training camp for some of these players will be coming up soon as the Traverse City NHL Prospects Tournament to be held at Centre I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City, Mich. will take place from Sept. 5-9.

The Hurricanes have yet to finalize and announce their roster for the tournament, but should release it in the coming weeks.
