RALEIGH, N.C. – For the first time since February 2020, the Carolina Hurricanes played in front of a sold-out, full-capacity crowd (18,680 fans) at PNC Arena, posting a 6-3 win over the NewYork Islanders to open the 2021-2022 season.
Andrei Svechnikov led the way for the Canes with two goals and an assist, while goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 25 of 28 shots and posted his first win in net with Carolina.
Forwards Teuvo Teravainen, Nino Niederreiter, Jordan Martinook, and Jesper Fast all tallied singles to support the winning effort.
Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, and Anders Lee scored for New York while goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 35 saves in the losing effort.
“Everyone played well”, Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said.
“Everyone played hard; it was a tough game out there. It was a tough, physical game, and fast too.”
Notables: Svechnikov posted his 33rd multi-point game and seventh multi-goal game of his NHL/Hurricanes career…Six players made their Hurricanes debuts: Andersen, Ethan Bear, Ian Cole, Tony DeAngelo, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Derek Stepan…DeAngelo (2a), Bear (1a), and Stepan (1a) recorded their first points with Carolina…The Canes’ six goals marked the first time the team has scored six or more goals in a season opener since 2008-09.
