PINEHURST, N.C. – The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on Friday groupings and starting times for the first two rounds of the 2014 U.S. Open to be played beginning Thurs. June 12 on Course No. 2 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.

Notable groupings for Triangle-area golf fans attending the 114th U.S. Open to note include 2011 and 2012 Championship winners Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson playing together, 2013 champion Justin Rose teeing it up with Phil Mickelson, and local college alums Kevin Streelman (Duke), Joe Ogilivie (Duke), and Ryan Blaum (Duke), Mark Wilson (UNC), and Garth Mulroy (N.C. State) playing in various threesomes.

The 72-hole, stroke-play competition, begins at 6:45 a.m., with a field of 156 completing 18 holes of stroke play on June 12 and 13, after which the field will be reduced to the low 60 scores and ties.

Those players making the cut will play 18 holes on June 14 and 15.

If there is a tie upon the completion of 72 holes, a scheduled 18-hole playoff will be played on June 16 at Noon.

If this playoff results in a tie, the tied players will immediately continue to play off hole-by-hole until the winner is determined.
