DURHAM, N.C. – Quarterback Daniel Jones headlines the group of team captains named to lead Duke football on the field in 2018, as was announced by Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe on Friday.

Selected by their teammates, Jones was picked for a second consecutive season, while Joe Giles-Harris, Ben Humphreys, and Johnathan Lloyd each earned their first captaincy.

Duke opens the season at home on Fri. Aug. 31 against Army with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.

About the captains

Jones, a 6-5, 220-pound redshirt junior quarterback from Charlotte, N.C., was named the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl MVP and was an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Bowl Team choice by ESPN.

During the Quick Lane Bowl, Jones set the game’s record for pass completions (27) while matching bowl game’s standard for touchdown passes (2).

On Duke’s bowl game charts, his Quick Lane Bowl totals rank second for rushing yards by a quarterback (86), tied for second for rushing attempts by a quarterback (16), tied for second for total touchdown responsibility (3), third for touchdown passes, third for total offensive yards (338), fourth for pass completions and fifth for passing yards (252).

Giles-Harris, a 6-2, 240-pound redshirt junior linebacker, finished 2017 with 125 tackles, 16 tackles for lost yardage, 4.5 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, one caused fumble and nine quarterback pressures.

The 2017 recipient of the program’s Carmen Falcone MVP award as Duke’s most outstanding player, Giles-Harris was an All-America selection by the Walter Camp Foundation (Second Team), CBS Sports (Third), Phil Steele’s College Football Preview (Third), and College Football News (Honorable Mention).

A native of Nyack, N.Y., Giles-Harris will enter the 2018 campaign as one of two returning players nationally to have posted 125 or more tackles and 15 or more tackles for loss a season ago, joining Joe Dineen of Kansas.

Humphreys, a 6-2, 225-pound senior linebacker from Newport Beach, Calif., is a preseason All-ACC selection by Lindy’s Sports (Third team) and Phil Steele (Third).

In 36 career games (25 starts), Humphreys has 207 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, eight quarterback sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one caused fumble, four pass breakups and 18 quarterback pressures.

Among active players in the ACC, he begins the season ranking fourth in career tackles.

Lloyd, a 6-0, 190-pound redshirt senior is returning for his third season as a starting wide receiver.

In 36 career games (24 starts), the Graham, N.C., product has 73 pass recep­tions for 668 yards (9.15) and four touchdowns.

In 2017, Lloyd started all 13 games and caught 39 passes for 367 yards (9.41) and one touchdown.

He had 10 games with two or more receptions including a season-high nine catches against Miami.
