PINEHURST, N.C. – Richard Sterne and Thomas Bjorn both withdrew from the field of the upcoming 2014 U.S. Open as a result of injury as announced by the United States Golf Association (USGA) on Wednesday.

First alternates Scott Langley and Andrew Dorn will take their place and tee it up on Pinehurst No. 2 next week.

Sterne, from South Africa had to pull out because he is still rehabilitating from an undisclosed injury while the Danish-born Bjorn, who was fully exempt and had played in the two previous U.S. Opens conducted at Pinehurst No. 2, pulled out of the tournament due to neck and shoulder injuries.

Langley (Jupiter, Fla.), who currently sits 78th in the PGA Tour’s Fed Ex Cup standings with four top-25 finishes, was the first alternate from the Memphis, Tenn., sectional qualifying site and will compete in his fourth U.S. Open.

In previous U.S Opens, the three-time All-American golfer at Illinois and 2010 NCAA Championship medalist, finished T41 (2013), T29 (2012), and T16 (2010).

Dorn, (West Chester, Ohio), a two-time All-Big South golfer at Coastal Carolina and winner of the 113th North and South Amateur played at Pinehurst last year, was the first alternate from the Springfield, Ohio, sectional qualifying site at Springfield Country Club.
